Are Professional Hair Products Really Worth the Money?
By Julie, Master Artist at THE LOFT
“Are you only telling me to buy this because you work here?”
Fair question.
But if I just spent three hours making your hair look amazing, I’m also going to tell you how to keep it looking that way at home.
And here’s the funny part: I wasn’t always the stylist who recommended professional products.
I Used to Think Product Was Product
For years, I honestly didn’t recommend professional hair products very often.
I hated feeling like I was “selling” something. If I didn’t genuinely believe a product made enough of a difference, I wasn’t going to tell my clients they needed to spend money on it.
My thinking was pretty simple:
Conditioner makes your hair soft. Any conditioner should get the job done.
It says color-safe and sulfate-free on the bottle. It must be fine.
Turns out, I was wrong.
Over time, I tried more professional products, learned more about how they're formulated and, most importantly, started seeing the difference they could make in my clients’ hair.
That changed the way I looked at recommending products completely.
You Just Invested in Your Hair
Think about what happens during a salon appointment.
Maybe we spent hours creating dimensional color. Maybe we lightened your hair carefully over several appointments. Maybe we finally got the tone exactly where you wanted it. Or maybe we worked on getting your hair healthier so it looks and feels better.
Then you go home.
What you use from that point forward matters.
The wrong shampoo can work against your color. The wrong conditioner can leave your hair feeling heavy or still not give it the moisture it needs. Products that aren't right for your hair can affect how it feels, how it styles and how well your salon results hold up between appointments.
So when I recommend something, I'm not trying to add another bottle to your shower.
I'm trying to help you protect the investment you just made in your hair.
What Makes Professional Products Different?
Not every expensive product is automatically better, and not every product you can buy outside a salon is terrible.
But professional products are generally developed with specific hair needs and salon services in mind. Depending on the product, that might mean more concentrated formulas, targeted ingredients, or technology designed for things like color protection, moisture, repair, smoothing or strengthening.
And concentration matters.
Sometimes you need much less product than you think. So while the bottle may cost more upfront, you're not necessarily using the same amount each time you shampoo or style.
But here's the bigger point:
The best product isn't the most expensive one. It's the one that's right for your hair.
No, You Don't Need 12 Products
This is another reason I used to hesitate to recommend anything.
I never want a client to feel like she needs to leave the salon carrying an entire shelf of products.
Most people don't need that.
Your routine should make sense for your hair and your life.
One client might need a really good shampoo, conditioner and heat protectant.
Someone with blonde or chemically treated hair may need additional repair or moisture.
Someone with curls may need something completely different.
Fine hair, coarse hair, extensions, color-treated hair and naturally textured hair don't all need the same things.
That's where your stylist should be able to help.
Ask Us Why
If your stylist recommends a product, you should feel completely comfortable asking:
Why this one?
That's actually a conversation I want to have.
I should be able to tell you what I'm seeing in your hair, what the product is meant to do, how much to use and why I think it's worth adding to your routine.
And if you don't need something?
I should be able to tell you that, too.
That's the difference between simply selling you a bottle and making a professional recommendation.
So, Are Professional Products Worth It?
I used to be skeptical myself.
Now? Yes—when they're the right products for your hair.
You don't need the most expensive routine. You don't need every new product that goes viral. And you definitely don't need a bathroom full of bottles you don't know how to use.
You need products that support what we're trying to accomplish together.
Because if you trust me with three hours of your time to create beautiful hair, I want the other hundreds of hours between appointments to be working in our favor, too.
And if that means telling you to please step away from the shampoo that's undoing all our hard work?
I will.
